Whag to do if my boy friend id HIV positive

I sympathise with your predicament, especially if you already have had sexual intercourse. Ideally, he should have told you before you decided to have sex.

If you have already had sexual intercourse, you should go for a blood test to find out whether you are infected by the virus or not. It is possible that you *have not* been infected, especially if you have been using condoms. It is also likely that your boyfriend is taking Anti Retroviral drugs (ART). If he is, the amount of virus in his body is likely to be low. Even if he is not, the transmission rate for HIV is 0.03% to 0.3% for vaginal intercourse. So it is possible that despite everything, you have not been infected.

You should consult your doctor or a HIV counsellor. They will then advise you about the best way to tackle your problem. You will need to undergo a series of tests for HIV at regular intervals for upto a year before you can consider yourself HIV negative. If you are mentally upset about this, they can counsel you to maintain your emotional peace. You must remember that HIV is not a killer infection. There are medicines available now which can control the virus and allow you to lead a full and healthy life.

The best course of action for you will be to consult your doctor or a HIV counsellor regarding your tests. You should of course adopt safe sexual practices in the future.
