BARBARÌSM IS NOT CULTURE ❌

Masquerades are very important component of the people of Nsukka cultural zone in Enugu state. They come in different colours, shapes and sizes and appear at various times of the year depending on communities, called Odo, especially in Aku, Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area; some other popular masquerades in the Nsukka zone are Oriokpa of Nsukka, Ogede of Orba and Akatakpa of Obollo Afor both in in Udenu Local Governmenet Area.

Unfortunately, this beautiful aspect of the Igbo culture has become a nightmare to the people of Nsukka zone as today; traditional rulers, church leaders, leaders of thought and indeed security agencies are faced with thei challenge of controlling the atrocities of masquerades.

The wanton barbarism and brutality associated with masquerades in some communities have become big source of concern; as they molest visitors and natives at will including girls and women, particularly during masquerade festivals. In fact, certain persons have lost their lives in the hands of masquerades in the area.

In the past,two catholic priests were waylaid and beaten to stupor by daredevil masquerades in Ogbodu-Aba, Udenu Local Government Area.

The two priests, were dragged out of their car by a group of masquerades and beaten like condemned criminals as reported,
Adding salt to injury, the crowd that gathered couldn’t even help matters, instead they encouraged and hailed the masquerades to go on with the abominable and mischìevous act which left one of the priest sustained serious injuries,affected his vision and was referred to a specialist hospital in Lagos while the other  had since been treated and discharged from hospital.

Investigation showed that masquerades have had very ugly encounters with church leaders, especially, clerics of the Catholic faith, in recent times.

In 2016, it was reported that a seminarian on one year apostolic work at one of the parishes at Orba, in Udenu Local Government Area was attacked by a group of of masquerades along Orba/Nsukka road. The seminarian was left with broken leg by his attackers; he sustained injuries and was hospitalised for more than six months.

In April 2017, A seminarian, escaped déath by whiskers when some masquerades attàcked him at the Ugwuoye axis of Nsukka town. The seminarian who was on six weeks apostolic work somewhere in  Nsukka on his way to pay electricity bill at the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Nsukka District, when he was rounded up by the masquerades and beaten to coma. He also had his head severely injured.

When there was upsurge in r0bbery in the Nsukka zone in September 2015; masquerades were fingered in the snatching of people’s handsets, laptops and even motorbikes in broad daylight. One of such incidents which took place in Ovoko, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area involved a pregnant woman.The attack which claimed the woman’s life attracted huge condemnation, but was not followed by any punitive measures on the perpétrators.

In fact, their activities ceased momentarily when the woman diéd; in Ovoko as reported but few weeks later, they continued unleashing terr0r on the innocent citizens again.

It was gathered that the  woman was on her way to a maternity home when the masquerades stopped her,beat her mercilessly, resulting in excess bleeding and her eventual déath.

Lately, A nurse on uniform going on her way to duty was brutally messed up by these sets of h00ligan in the name of masquerade where she ran into the gutter.

The above listed are pure wickedness and typical act of barbarìsm.. 

Is it that the traditional rulers doesn't know what to do about this ?

Is it that Local Government or state Government doesn't know what to do on this incessant act or barbarìsm masquerading as culture in the society? 

How long do we keep quite watching and  allowing masquerades continue molesting and wreaking havoc on the Innocent masses and  more especially the  priests?.”

Can't we have measures to checkmate the excesses of these masquerades?

“These masquerades are gradually turning Nsukka into full blown terr0rist zone in the name of promoting culture and we don’t want them to turn Nsukka into a violence prone area because of masquerade. We want our community to remain as peaceful as ever.”

I know that some masquerades doesn't know but the sponsors or someone who knows should tell them that
In 1999 Constitution Chapter four fundamental human rights: there is a provision for right to dignity of human person.

“In the first provision, it stated that nobody should be subjected to torture. But these masquerades don’t know anything about your right, your liberty or your freedom of anything. They can abuse you; torture you contrary to the provisions of the constitution.

“We have freedom of expression, freedom of movement, they don’t allow you to move about, they have so much abused it that at times they use the opportunity to stéal which is completely against the express provision of fundamental human rights, and I don’t think that is culture. A culture does not mean violation of another person’s right.”
Many people are unhappy that masquerades that should be source of unification and cultural development have become threát to people of the area and have therefore, called for their outright ban or at best, limiting of their days of outing in different communities.

Only the few who praise the brutality from these masquerades have kept  me wondering the following:

If they are yet to realize that Nsukka is no longer the small village it used to be?

If they don't know that Nsukka is now a town filled up with people from different parts of the country?.

If they don't know that most of these masquerades beating needs to stop?

Doesn't they know that some of these Masquerades have messed up culture using this as an avenue for hein0us crìme. Etc.

In summary, Masquerades are gradually turning Culture into Barbarìsm and Barbarìsm is not culture.

*A CHRISTIAN WORKER’S GUIDE TO FRUITFULNESS*

*“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” (John 15:4)*

Today, the first of May is known as International Workers Day. In many countries, it is observed as a public holiday to celebrate workers' contributions to national development. For us Christians, today is a day to remember the man who taught Jesus Christ how to work and because of whom Jesus was addressed as ‘the Carpenter’s Son’. While we join the world to celebrate workers, we celebrate St. Joseph, the head of the Holy Family. This feast was instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1955. Coincidentally, today’s readings present some salient points on achieving fruitfulness as workers.   

*1. Do Not Be Distracted By Traditions:* Every organisation (company or group) has certain codes of conduct that guide its staff or members. Some of these codes have been practised for many years and may have lost their relevance over time but have become ingrained in the mentality of such organisations. For instance, in today’s first reading, some men from Judea brought a disturbing teaching to the Christian converts: “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” Meanwhile, circumcision was only a sign, not the essence of the covenant with God. “You shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between you and me.” (Genesis 17:11). By emphasising circumcision, these Jewish Christians did not realise the importance of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross. Are there traditions around my work that have lost relevance over time? 

*2. Stay Connected to Jesus:* There is a saying that “What is beyond six is more than seven.” As a worker in any field, pay attention to your spiritual life and do not depend solely on your human efforts and skills. Jesus tells us today: “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.” Listen to Jesus daily. Obey God’s commandments. Do not worship money. Today, many business people, including so-called Christians, get entangled with the devil, all in the name of protecting their business. By so doing, they mortgage their souls. The devil can never bless you.   

*3. Glorify God By Your Work:* “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.” (John 15:7-8). As a Christian worker, remember that you are a missionary. In other words, we should aim for productivity and fruitfulness. Beyond doing your job excellently to satisfy your customers and employers, aim to win souls for God. This can only happen when you are prayerful and abide in (study) God’s Word daily. Remember, you cannot give what you don’t have. You cannot convert your fellow workers if you are not well-grounded in God’s Word or are not prayerful.

*4. Make St. Joseph Your Role Model:* As a worker, emulate the virtues of St. Joseph, which include righteousness – a commitment to do what is right and not cut corners, protection of the family – being ready to take risks for the good of those under your care, hard work and diligence – see work as a blessing and not as a curse, chastity – avoid all forms of immorality, obedience to God – seek to please God above everything else, silence – let your actions speak louder than your words, prudence – never rush to decide anything; sleep over the issue and let God speak to your heart. When work gets hard and tough, ask St. Joseph to pray to God on your behalf, and He who wasn’t afraid of work will intercede for you. 

*Let us pray:* Almighty, ever-living God, grant me the grace to abide firmly in you always. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen

*THE MOTHER OF JESUS WAS THERE*

*“Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’” (John 2:4-5)*

As the month of April comes to an end today, we celebrate a Feast that perfectly sets us in the mood for devotion to Mary, given that May is Mary’s Month. Today is the feast of Our Lady, Mother of Africa. Our Gospel passage today captures that familiar scene of the Wedding Feast at Cana. The role Mary played in ensuring the miracle is one reason we often turn to her when we pray to God.

First, Mary understood the problem and immediately informed Jesus that “they have no wine.” In other words, “Do something.” Mary teaches us to have faith in Jesus.

Secondly, we see that Jesus has very high regard for Mary. Jesus initially protested, “My hour has not yet come”, but Mary pressed further. Mary teaches us never to give up when we pray for anything.

Thirdly, after successfully convincing Jesus to help the couple, Mary told the servants, “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5). Mary teaches us to trust and obey God.

Fourthly, after the miracle, we do not hear anything from Mary. She remained in the background. Mary teaches us humility. She does not brag like some of us do.

Mary is the definition of an intercessor. If we ask human intercessors to pray for us, we should not be afraid to ask Mary to pray for us, whether we are Catholics or not. Asking for her intercession is not worshipping her.

Our first reading tells us that Mary was present with the Apostles in the Upper Room, where they devoted themselves to prayer. They took her as their mother. Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus Christ is fully human and fully God knows that Mary is not just any woman; she is not an envelope God used and dumped. 

In our responsorial psalm today, Mary declares: “Henceforth, all generations will call me blessed” not because she is some goddess but because “He who is mighty has done great things for me” (Luke 1:48-49). We honour Mary because God honoured her first.

Today, we celebrate the fact that Mary intercedes for Africa. When Herod sought to kill the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph took shelter in Africa. At a time when our continent is faced with turmoil and suffering under the yoke of neo-colonialism, we need Mother Mary’s intercession more than ever. 

*Let us pray:* Almighty, ever-living God, may your mother pray for us. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen

🎤PRAYER IS THE MASTER KEY

Beloved in Christ, today is the last day in the month of April. Obviously, it has been a challenging time for us, especially those of us in Nigeria. So as this month ends today, we pray that it may also bring to an end, our challenges and disappointments, and that in the subsequent months, blessings and breakthroughs and good health of mind and body shall be our lot through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Church in Africa, today,  celebrates the Feast of our Lady, Mother of Africa. In this celebration, we express our belief in her maternal intercession and learn from her mode of prayer. After the Ascension of Jesus, she remained with the other disciples in prayer (cf. Acts 1:12-14), teaching us the importance of praying in season and out of season. 

What is the content of that prayer? Acts 1:12-14 did not give us the format of their prayers but because Mary was there, we can say that they prayed for the will of God to be done in their lives (see Luke 1:38; John 2:5). Such prayer is one of faith that makes a seemingly impossible task to become possible. 

Consider what happened at the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee (John 2:1-11). Mary approached Jesus and informed him that the host had run short of wine. I wonder who sent her on that errand! Well, that is in her nature as a mother; always looking for ways to offer a helping hand. 

Wait! Jesus was just a poor carpenter! So what was she expecting him to do? Well, she is the mother of Jesus, and she knows Jesus more than we do. Hence, with faith, she tells the servants as she tells us today, "Do whatever he tells you" (John 2:5).

Can you hear that? Mary is not dragging power with God. She does not replace God for us as many people allege. She directs us to meet God - "Do whatever he tells you!"

We pray for her maternal intercession so that we may always learn to do the will of God and pray fervently as we ought to pray. May our jars be filled with blessings, good health, good fortunes, and protection now and forever through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kindly pray for the return of all those who are missing, especially those who are in serious danger at the moment.

Before you eat

One morning, I woke up to find my neighbor's children drinking garri with salt in the compound.

They saw me and greeted me.

"Uncle Praises good morning."

The last born shouted.

"Uncle Praises come and eat."

Playfully I walked to them.

"What are you eating?"

"Gmax." The firstborn replied.

The rest of the children laughed.

"You mean Garri?"

"Uncle Praises this is not garri, it is GMax. A kind of snack."

I chuckled.

I told them to bring me a spoon let me join them.

They raised their head and looked at me. They were shocked.

The second born touched the last born and said.

"Go and bring spoon for Uncle. Uncle Praises wants to eat GMax snacks."

The boy ran in and returned with a spoon.

As I took a spoon, that was when I realized the Garri was not with Sugar but with salt.

The children started laughing.

I paused for a while and swallowed.

"Uncle, so you use to eat GMax snacks too." The last born asked.

I nodded my head. I told him I am a professional in Gmax garri.

Their mother who heard the laughter came out of the room and saw me. She was smiling.

"Uncle Praises, you seff the drink garri."

I told her I decided to join my younger brothers to eat.

She smiled.

"Eya. Today wey we no get better food to cook except garri, na that time you come chop."

I chuckled.

"Mummy, God know say na my favourite food na im make he make me see am to chop today."

The last born laughed.

"Uncle Praises like Gmax o."

I told her that after eating, I and my younger brothers would go out and buy noodles for breakfast.

She laughed.

The boys were excited. They began to rush the garri so it would finish quickly.

When we were done drinking Garri, I took the boys out and we bought a carton of noodles for them. 

When the mother saw her children carrying a carton into the house, she became emotional. 

She said to me.

"Uncle Praises, this is the first time I will have anything in carton in my house. See how God the take bless him children."

I handed her money that would be enough to cook two pots of soup for the week. 

The first child held my hands and said.

"Uncle, Thank you."

He beckoned on the brothers to come say thank you. 

The last child ran and embraced me.

Then he said.

"Uncle... Uncle... In the afternoon you will come and eat GMax with us again ba. We would put sugar inside for you."

I tried hard to hold back my tears.

Before you look down on that meal God has provided you to eat, remember that there are people who do not have up to that standard. Be grateful and content.
