Treatment for calcaneal spur

Calcaneum is commonly known as the heel bone. The heel bone is subject to great pressure and weight bearing as we walk or run or even stand. Also, the tendons of the calf muscle are inserted into this bone. The contractions of this muscle generates high forces on the bone. These pressures can cause the bone to react by growing extra layers of bone in the most sensitive areas. This can show up as hooks or spurs of varying sizes on X-Ray films. Calcaneal spurs can cause pain, especially if they grow on the undersurface of the bone. The only definitive treatment for these is surgical removal. In the meantime you can try wearing soft soled footwear to reduce the pressure on the bone.
