Girlfriend HIV but I want to marry

After reading all the questions on this forum about how everybody seems to fear HIV and people living with HIV, your question is refreshingly different. As I have said many times in this channel, HIV is no longer a killer disease. This is because of the number of different medicines that are available for therapy. HIV today has become a treatable infection and hardly anyone progresses to AIDS.

From the point of view of the person infected with HIV, Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) suppresses viral multiplication to the extent that the virus cannot be detected in blood. This is known as “undetectable viral load”. Suppression of the virus means that their immune system does not get damaged and they can lead healthy and active lives.

From your point of view, as the person wanting to marry an HIV positive person, an undetectable viral load means that the chances of transmission of the virus from her to you is negligible. In fact it has been shown that persons with HIV who are taking their ART regularly, having an undetectable viral load, and do not have another sexually transmitted infection, are virtually non-infective. The use of condoms in sexual intercourse when combined with undetectable viral load is perhaps the best way to prevent HIV transmission.

I would advise both of you to consult your doctor or a HIV counsellor in your area for a detailed discussion on the issue.
